Sharia-state access advisory

Commercial gambling is prohibited under Islamic penal codes in the following 12 states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which have adopted Sharia law as part of their criminal codes: Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara. Hisbah boards — including those in Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna and Sokoto — actively enforce these prohibitions.

Advisory: If you reside in, or are currently located in, any of the 12 states listed above, we advise you not to register with or use any gambling operator and not to use this site for the purpose of identifying gambling opportunities. Tax on winnings — disclaimer

Nigerian tax law imposes a withholding tax on gambling and lottery winnings. Pursuant to the Deduction at Source (Withholding) Regulations 2024, gazetted on 2 October 2024 and effective from 1 January 2025, the applicable rates are 5% for resident winners and 15% for non-resident winners. From February 2026, Lagos-licensed operators are required to deduct this tax automatically at the point of payout and remit it to the Lagos Inland Revenue Service (‘LIRS’). The Nigeria Tax Act (‘NTA’) 2025, effective 1 January 2026, confirms the worldwide-income basis applicable to Nigerian residents.

By way of illustration only: on a Lagos-licensed platform, a resident player’s gross win multiplied by 95% represents the net amount credited after the 5% withholding deduction. This figure is provided for general orientation; it is not tax advice.

Cross-border and offshore operators — disclaimer (including VPN)

A number of online gambling operators that this site may reference hold licences issued by foreign regulatory bodies, including the Curaçao Gaming Control Board, the Anjouan Offshore Finance Authority, and the Malta Gaming Authority (‘MGA’). We do not guarantee the conduct, financial standing or regulatory compliance of foreign-licensed operators. Players who use such operators do so entirely at their own risk, and disputes with foreign-licensed operators fall outside Nigerian regulatory jurisdiction.

VPN advisory: The use of a Virtual Private Network (‘VPN’) to access or play on a gambling platform is prohibited by the terms and conditions of most operators and will, in practice, void winnings at most platforms. We strongly advise against using a VPN for this purpose.

Payment-rail risk: The CBN and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (‘EFCC’) actively monitor payment rails feeding offshore betting activity. In April 2024, more than 105 fintech accounts that were identified as channelling funds to offshore betting platforms were frozen. This is a material financial risk of which users should be aware.
